Objective

The goal of this drill is to help defenders understand their responsibilities in relation to the ball.

As the ball moves around the perimeter, defenders must recognize when to extend toward the ball and when to recover inside to provide help around the crease.

The drill emphasizes staying connected as a defensive unit rather than simply defending individual matchups.

Setup

Set up five offensive players around the perimeter and crease area with four defenders.

Player X1 starts with the ball and passes to X2.

As the pass is made:

  • D2 extends out to cover X2.

  • D1 recovers toward the inside.

  • D1 helps D4 protect against X5 around the crease.

The same movement continues as the ball moves around the perimeter.

Defensive Movement

The key concept is simple:

Ball moves out → defender extends.
Off-ball defenders recover inside.

For example, when the ball moves from X2 to X3, D3 extends to cover X3 while D2 recovers toward the inside.

The defenders should continually adjust their positioning based on where the ball is and where the crease threat is located.

This teaches defenders to protect the most dangerous area of the field while still closing out on the ball.

Skills Practiced

This drill develops several defensive fundamentals:

  • 1v1 defense

  • Communication

  • Off-ball defense

  • Sliding and crashing

  • Denying cuts

  • Denying passes

  • Inside positioning

  • Recovering into help position

Progression

Start by limiting the offense's ability to pass to X5.

This allows the defense to focus on learning the correct recovery technique without immediately having to defend a live crease feed.

Once the defenders understand the movement, allow passes into X5 and progress the drill into a 5v4 live situation.

You can also allow the offense to attack the goal from multiple locations to make the defensive rotations more realistic.

Coaching Points

The defenders should avoid simply chasing the ball around the perimeter.

Instead, every player needs to understand their relationship to the ball and the crease.

When you're responsible for the ball, extend and defend.

When you're off ball, recover inside and be ready to help.

Stay connected, protect the crease, and communicate every rotation.
