Pop Passing

Pop passing is an offensive concept in men’s lacrosse that uses player movement to create short passing options and help the offense move the ball around the field.

The concept involves a player moving into an available space to receive a pass, giving the ball carrier another option and helping the offense maintain possession.

How Pop Passing Works

The play begins with offensive players positioned around the offensive zone.

As the ball carrier holds possession, a teammate moves into an open area to become a passing option. The ball carrier can pass to that player, who can then move the ball to another teammate.

This movement creates a passing sequence that allows the offense to move the ball while responding to the defensive positioning.

Create Passing Options

Spacing is important when executing pop passes.

Players should position themselves far enough apart to create clear passing lanes while remaining close enough to support the ball carrier.

When a teammate pops into open space, the ball carrier should recognize the opportunity and deliver the pass when the lane is available.

Move After the Pass

Pop passing works best when players continue moving after releasing the ball.

After receiving a pass, a player can look for another available teammate or move the ball to a player who has found space.

The other offensive players should also continue adjusting their positions to maintain passing options.

Read the Defense

Players need to recognize how defenders react to the movement.

If a defender closes down the player receiving the pass, the offense should look for another available option.

If the defense leaves a passing lane open, the ball carrier can use that space to move the ball.

The goal is to make decisions based on the defensive positioning rather than forcing a predetermined pass.

Coaching Points

1. Maintain spacing. Keep enough distance between players to create usable passing lanes.

2. Move into open space. Players should provide clear targets for the ball carrier.

3. Pass with purpose. Deliver the ball when the passing lane is available.

4. Keep moving. Continue creating options after making or receiving a pass.

5. Read the defense. Recognize pressure and identify the next available teammate.

Why Practice Pop Passing?

Pop passing helps players practice movement, passing accuracy, spacing, and decision-making within an offensive structure.

It encourages players to support the ball carrier and recognize opportunities created by movement.

By combining accurate passing with good positioning, an offense can maintain possession and find openings as the defense adjusts.

Move into space. Make the pass. Find the next option.
