Pick the Picker is a women’s lacrosse offensive play that uses a dodge, 2-man action, picks, and multiple cutting options to create a shot on goal.

Directions

1. Get the Ball Around

Get the ball around and have everyone get to their starting positions.

2. Get Into Position

After getting a touch on the ball:

  • X2 moves inside below X1 on the 2nd inside hash on the 8m.

  • X3 pulls out in between the elbow and the hanging hash.

  • X6 pulls in to the 8m elbow on the left side.

  • X4, X5, X7, and X1 stay in their starting positions.

3. Start the Play

The play starts when the ball gets back to X1 and everyone is in position.

4. X1 Dodges

X1 starts the play by dodging hard to the outside down the alley.

5. X2 Mirrors X1

X2 mirrors to the inside as X1 dodges.

The mirror is acting as the first pick as part of the 2-man action.

6. X3 Sets the Pick

X3 cuts in and up to set a pick on X2's defender as X1 takes the alley.

7. X4 Pops Out

X4 pops out low for an outlet pass from X1.

8. X6 Sets the Backside Pick

X6 sets an up-pick on X7's defender on the backside.

At the same time, X5 pinches toward the crease as a secondary outlet.

9. X2 Comes Off the Pick

X2 comes off the pick from X3, looking for the feed from X4.

10. X4 Feeds X2

X4 makes the feed to X2 for a shot on goal.

11. Look for the Next Cutting Options

If X2 is not open, X3 and X1 can be the 2nd and 3rd cutting options.

Continue reading the defense instead of forcing the first feed.

12. Clear to the Backside

If no cutters are open, they can clear out to the backside.

This gives X4 room to dodge 1v1 from the wing.

Play Progression

The play follows a simple sequence:

Dodge → Mirror Pick → Pick → Outlet → Backside Pick → Cut → Feed → Shot

The key is keeping the movement connected. X1's initial dodge starts the action, X2's mirror creates the first pick, and X3's pick gives X2 another opportunity to cut into space.

If the first option isn't available, the offense continues through its secondary and third cutting options before clearing space for X4 to attack.
