How to Throw a Lacrosse Ball: Key Steps for Accuracy and Control

Following these steps will help you develop greater precision and control in your lacrosse throws, ultimately improving your performance on the field.

  1. Hand Positioning:
Place your dominant hand near the top of the stick and your lower hand at the bottom (or "butt end"). Using tape near the top can help remind you to keep your top hand from slipping too low, which maintains better control.

  2. Push and Pull Motion:
When throwing, use a “push and pull” motion: your lower hand pulls down as your top hand pushes forward. This movement gives you more precision and power in your throw.

  3. Stick Alignment and Foot Positioning:
Line up your stick by pointing the butt end toward your target. Step forward with the foot opposite to your throwing hand. This helps maintain balance and directs the ball more accurately.

  4. Follow-Through:
Be sure to follow through with your throwing motion, keeping the stick straight for greater accuracy. If you throw sidearm or twist the stick, the ball may veer off course.

  5. Practice with Gloves:
Practicing with gloves is essential since you’ll wear them in games. While pros sometimes adjust their gloves, it’s best to practice with standard gloves to get used to the feel.

  6. Practice on the Move:
Once you’re comfortable with stationary throws, practice throwing while moving to simulate real game situations.
