How to Catch a Lacrosse Ball

  1. Provide a Target (The Box):
    Position the head of your stick in a spot that gives your teammate a clear target. This ideal receiving area, called "the box," is located between your ear and shoulder, making it easier to catch the ball comfortably.

  2. Correct Grip (Choke Up):
    Place your top hand close to the head of the stick, without touching it. This gives you more control, essential for making quick adjustments and catching the ball accurately.

  3. Soft Hands:
    As the ball arrives, use “soft hands” to cushion the impact. This involves slightly moving your stick backward when you receive the ball, rather than stopping it abruptly, which helps prevent the ball from bouncing out.

  4. Catch Behind the Head:
    It’s ideal to receive the ball just behind your head. This helps you keep possession and prepares you quickly for your next move—whether it’s a pass, shot, or cradle. Catching behind the head gives you better control and protects the ball.

  5. Avoid Catching Far from Your Body:
    Don’t try to catch the ball too far from your body or with a sudden motion. If you do, you’ll need to reposition the stick to make your next move, which takes time and leaves you vulnerable.
