How to Execute the Rusty Gate Check in Men’s Lacrosse

The rusty gait check in men's lacrosse. For long stick defender or short stick defender it is a great defensive move.

In men’s lacrosse, the “Rusty Gate” check is an advanced, flashy, and risky defensive maneuver where the defender swings their stick behind their back to dislodge the ball from an offensive player’s stick. Here’s how you can throw it:

1. Overplay your opponent: First, get the offensive player to move in a specific direction, often by overplaying them, forcing them to roll back or change direction.

2. Drop Step and Swing: As they roll or change direction, drop-step with your back foot and swing your stick in a wide arc behind your back, aiming to dislodge the ball from their stick without making head or body contact. It’s essential to keep the stick parallel to the ground and aim at their stick or elbow to make contact.

3. Riskier Method: The riskier version of the Rusty Gate involves running alongside the opponent at full speed. As you’re running, swing the stick all the way around your back to swipe at their stick. This version requires turning your torso while keeping your hips forward, making it harder to recover if you miss.

While it can be effective, this check carries a high risk, as it leaves the defender vulnerable if it fails. Always keep two hands on the stick and be ready to recover quickly.
