Duration: 90 Minutes
Theme: Fast Transitions – From Chaos to Control
Equipment Needed:
15–20 lacrosse balls
12 cones
6 pinnies (3 of each color)
2 full-size goals
Stopwatch or whistle
Training Breakdown
00:00 – 00:10 | Warm-Up: Dynamic Rondo Drill
Focus: Communication, movement, and fast ball exchange.
Players form a circle (8–10 players) with two defenders in the middle. The ball moves quickly around the circle with cradling passes and quick one-touch releases.
Coaching points:
Keep sticks up and ready.
Use both hands for passing and catching.
Encourage quick recovery if defenders steal the ball.
00:10 – 00:25 | Transition Awareness: Chaos to Clarity Transition Drill (2v1 → 3v2 → 4v3)
Focus: Recognition and structured buildup from unsettled play.
Start with 2v1 at midfield, progressing to 3v2 and 4v3. After each play, add one player to simulate organized transition.
Coaching points:
First look: fast break lane.
Second look: trailer for support.
Third look: reset and build shape.
Defenders communicate slides early.
00:25 – 00:45 | Main Drill: Fast Break Scramble
Focus: Transition execution and spacing recovery.
Set up 3 attackers across midfield and 3 defenders near the restraining line. On the whistle, attackers sprint in a 3v2 or 4v3 formation. Rotate roles after each play.
Coaching points:
Read spacing before receiving.
Push the pace—don’t over cradle.
Aim to score within 5 seconds of entering the box.
00:45 – 01:05 | West Genny Drill
Focus: Quick transitions between offense and defense.
Split into two teams (6v6). Once a team scores or loses possession, immediately switch direction to defend the other goal.
Coaching points:
React fast after turnovers.
Talk through every switch.
Stay compact on defense, expand on offense.
01:05 – 01:25 | Small-Sided Game: 4v4 Continuous Transition
Focus: Apply fast-break principles in open play.
Use a half field. After each goal or turnover, the defending team immediately counterattacks toward the opposite mini-goal.
Coaching points:
Encourage communication and fast decision-making.
Focus on “first pass after recovery.”
Promote creativity and support play.
01:25 – 01:30 | Cool Down & Reflection
Focus: Active recovery and team feedback.
Light jog + static stretching.
Team talk on transition communication and off-ball movement.
Discuss where players recognized good transition moments.
Coach’s Insight: Why This Session Works
Fast transitions define high-level women’s lacrosse. This 90-minute session develops both the physical and cognitive aspects required to master them. The warm-up rondo activates communication and quick passing. “Chaos to Clarity” introduces players to progressive recognition turning a disorganized play into structured offense.
The Fast Break Scramble and West Genny drills simulate real-game transitions, emphasizing quick decision-making and immediate role switching. Players learn to read the field, move without hesitation, and attack efficiently in numbers-up situations. Meanwhile, defenders are challenged to recover and communicate slides under pressure.
The final 4v4 continuous game provides dynamic repetition of all concepts in a fun, competitive format. This drill forces constant transitions, where every player must think two steps ahead. The mix of speed, control, and teamwork ensures that athletes leave the session more aware of spacing, angles, and communication flow skills that translate directly into game performance.
By combining progressive structure with intensity, this plan helps advanced players refine how they see and react to the field turning chaos into clarity on every transition.
