Dodging from X out of an open set

Preview

This strategy utilizes an open set with two triangular formations—one positioned up top and one below.

Setup:

  • The lower triangle features one player behind the goal at X and two players stationed on either side, about five feet above goal line extended (GLE).

  • The upper triangle is formed by the three midfielders spaced evenly.

Execution:

  1. Initiating the Dodge:
The player at X initiates a dodge toward the goal.

    • As they dodge, the adjacent player on the side they are running towards makes a hard cut to the crease with their stick up, ready to receive a pass for a quick shot.

    • The player on the opposite side of the dodge rotates behind the cage to fill the X position, ensuring a viable rollback option.

  2. Maintaining Spacing and the Triangle:
Throughout the dodge, the players maintain the triangular formations. The open space in the middle creates a prime area for the cutter to catch the ball and get a quick shot off.

  3. Decision-Making:

    • If the cutter's defender slides to help: The dodger can pass to the cutter for an immediate scoring opportunity.

    • If no slide comes: The dodger can attack the goal with confidence, knowing they have a one-on-one matchup.

    • If a midfielder's defender slides: The dodger should locate the open midfielder for a time-and-room shot from up top.

Why It’s Effective:

  • The open set clears out the middle, providing maximum space for the cutter and dodger to operate.

  • The constant movement and rotation behind the cage ensure the offense maintains shape, making it harder for the defense to recover.

  • This approach capitalizes on quick reads and creates multiple high-percentage scoring opportunities.

Pro Tip:

If you have a strong dodger at X, this strategy is simple, effective, and highly recommended. It puts pressure on the defense to decide between stopping the dodge, covering the cutter, or protecting against an outside shot.
