The Man to Man Goalie Jump Ride

The goalie jump man ride is a simple ride that is good for youth lacrosse as it is possibly the easiest ride to teach. The objective of this ride is to play man coverage where we match feet with all field players and leave the goalie uncovered. This can be very effective at the youth level where many goalies are not as comfortable handling the ball. The downsides of this play are that it can lead to a very easy fast break if you play a goalie that is fast and comfortable handling the ball and that it allows the goalie to walk the ball up and shorten a throw to a player that gets open.

How It Works

  • Have each player lock off one player- attack covering D, middies covering middies, and defenders covering attackmen.

  • Leave the goalie open.

  • At some point when the goalie is in a bad position, you can instruct an attackman to “jump” the goalie or you can leave the goalie open until they make a mistake.

  • It is smart to have a call to get out of this play and crash to the hole, preventing a fast break.

  • If you instruct your attackman to never cross midfield, the goalie could have a really easy pass to a defender that steps over.

Teaching This

Since this one is about as simple as they come, I recommend practicing it by setting the field and letting the players get as many reps as possible. Try it where your players all match feet and also where your attackman is not allowed to go over.
