Break out and clear long passing drill

For all you coaches who want to play fast, this is where the fast break begins!

This is a great variation of line drills that helps to work on clearing passes.

The idea is to use more of the field to make the passes longer while throwing to players breaking up the field much like in real games.

This is so important to work on because this tends to be one of the more difficult passes to do ( a long pass to a player on running away from the passer)  and it is being executed by what is more often than not our less skilled players (defense).

Remember this pass is being done very often in a quick transition so there is often no time to sub in our more skilled plates for the d-middies or long poles.
As we all know, if you cannot clear the ball, the game can quickly turn into a disaster.

  • 4 lines of players

    • 2 at the end and 2 in the middle

  • The players at the end lines will make a pass to the player in the middle breaking up field.

  • After making the catch they will then throw the ball to the players on the end and go to the end of the line.

A slight modification is made for the goalie in the center line.  There the players can take a light shot so the goalie can work on his form.  You want the goalie to get in the habit of using good form saving the ball transitioning to a quick outlet to the player breaking upfield after the save is made.
