Face off wing challenge

We all know how imperative face offs are in a game and having great wing play is a key part of winning faceoffs.

Being a wing on a face off is a great opportunity for a player with a ton of heart and hustle but not a lot of experience or skill to earn his time on the field.

Do this enough and you will figure out very quickly who should be on the wings during the face off.  It is also just a fun 2v2 ground ball drill.

But how do you test that?

The concept is to do face off without the face-off guys. As you are doing this drill your face off men can be working on face-off technique and going through their routine.

  • Line up two players on each wing same as you would for a face off.

  • Have a coach/injured player in the restraining box on each side.

  • Send the ball in the middle similar to how a ball pops out during a face off.

  • The players will now compete for the ball and upon winning the ball they will throw it to the coach in their offensive zone.
