Circle The Crease Into a 3v2

I love drills that can incorporate a little bit of everything.  This fun version of 3v2 does exactly that.  I highly recommend you give it a try if you want to work on some fundamentals but change things up a little bit.

This drill works on:
- Conditioning
- Ground balls
- Shooting
- Passing
- Defensive team work
- Most importantly a little fun competition.

The drill is very simple but effective. It is great for players of all ages and talent levels, ranging from youth to college players.

The drill offers an opportunity to coach spacing out of chaos, sliding with the stick-up and to the inside to snag a pass, and potentially so much more in terms of the fundamentals.

The drill:

  • Two defenders and a goalie run little laps inside the crease around the goal, constantly moving in a clockwise direction.

  • Three offensive players run laps outside the crease in a counterclockwise direction.

  • While the players are running the laps the coach rolls the ball out close to the crease.

    • The coach can enforce that the ball is not being rolled out until he sees the players going at a satisfactory speed as a way to enforce effort in conditioning.

    • This also makes it difficult for the players to focus on where the ball is

    • When the ball goes down, the goalie might even be behind the cage.

  • At this point, the offensive and defensive players need to find the ball.

  • The offensive players need to gain possession, create spacing, move the ball, and quickly attack the goal.

  • The defensive players need to make the quick decision whether it is worth attempting to try to get the ground ball or quickly stack and prepare to slide in the 3V2 scenario.

  • The drill ends if the offense scores or the defense gets possession.  Based on the  personnel you have and your goals for that practice you may want to end the drill after the defense makes a pass.

Due to the proximity to the goal, this drill tends to go very quickly as the offensive players learn to pick it up, make one or two quick passes then shoot.
